Sir Henry Morgan was born in 1635, years later he joined the British naval army and served as a buccaneer. A couple more years after that he became a privateer which is like a pirate, but he was licensed to invade Spanish ships.
Morgan designed an attack on Panama in Portobello which was an important trade site. He couldn't sail straight there as it was guarded by soldiers, so he landed his ship miles away from Portobello and it took the guards by surprise making it an easy steal of Portobello's first fort.
Unfortunately for Morgan the second fort had heard of the previous attack so they had time to prepare and made it more difficult to take over. Nonetheless, Morgan still invaded and his men pillaged the village and they left with 250, 00 pesos.
Sometime later Morgan tried this operation again in 1671, but instead was given a different outcome. The Spaniards were prepared for any attacks this time so when Morgan came they unloaded their secret weapon on them. The weapon was herds of oxen. The oxen's purpose was to stampede the buccaneers out of Panama.
While they were being run off, Don Juan, the president of the city council, had an idea that in case the city of Panama was pillaged by Morgan then they should make sure that there's nothing left for him to pillage. They loaded their ships with most of their treasures and burn down the city if the buccaneers did reach it. The city was blown up and left a disaster.
The buccaneers still found some money, but it was only €30,000 which meant divided between his men, each didn't get very much money. This outcome infuriated many people.
The Spanish demanded England punish Morgan for the destruction of Panama, but they found him not guilty and was released of these charges.
